Gareth Mattey, stage director
Gareth Mattey is a librettist, director, dramaturg and filmmaker. They began directing opera while studying English at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, later pursuing an MPhil on the relationship of opera and cinema. They recently achieved a distinction in their MA in Opera Making and Writing with Guildhall School of Music and Drama for writing their first chamber opera, Reel Woman.
Their recent work as director includes Last Thursday (Central School of Speech and Drama, also librettist), the Cover Show for The Rake’s Progress (British Youth Opera), Anthems for Queer Youth (Guildhall School of Music and Drama), twelve steps (GSMD and Goodenough College, also librettist), The Snow Child (Paradise at Augustine’s, Edinburgh Festival Fringe) and co-directing the UK premiere of the chamber version of John Tavener’s Mary of Egypt (King’s College Chapel).
They have previously worked as an assistant director with British Youth Opera, National Youth Music Theatre, Cambridge Arts Theatre, Royal Academy Opera and the Helios Collective in association with English National Opera. They have also observed work with the Royal Opera House (as part of their recent MA), the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester and regularly with Music Theatre Wales.
